Groovy Grab Bag: Killers, Pins + Movies

by Jennifer

You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus. ~Mark Twain

How exactly does your imagination get out of focus? It starts simply…and then grows from chasing squirrels to buses to shiny objects. The brain clutter starts to choke out the creativity – like ivy overgrowth in your landscaped yard.

It’s a huge challenge for entrepreneurs who have at least one great idea every day – if not every hour. Never fear! This week’s grab bag is a true eclectic variety of resources to help you get a grip and get back in focus. Let’s dive in!

copyblogger logo Groovy Grab Bag: Killers, Pins + MoviesCopyblogger is consistently one of the best blogs to read if any part of your business is online especially, of course, if that includes blogging. But, even if it doesn’t, Copyblogger is an amazing resource. It’s about business and doing business in a way that is real and not gimmicky. This particular post about creativity killers is in that exact vein: real business, no gimmicks, common sense at its best. It focuses on the eight “very worst habits that could be holding you back every day.” What’s lucky number 7? Being overwhelmed by information – suffering from analysis paralysis (aka shiny objects + squirrels). Ummm hmmm…major creativity killer not to mention action hijacker.

pinterest logo 66x66 Groovy Grab Bag: Killers, Pins + MoviesPinterest is the latest social media darling – and for good reason. It is visual – a virtual collection of pinboards where people (mostly women) have pinned the best stuff they find on the web in pictures (with links). Whether you are interested in cats, Mason jars or planning a wedding you can find something here. Some of my favorites are related to inspirational quotes and there are lots of options to explore. Be sure to check out Edna Dougher’s Quotable Quotes board, Mando Yancho’s Inspiration and Living Words, Jennifer Pollock’s Quotes To Focus On and my One Part Inspiration.

I have a whole level of appreciation for animated movies that are great for the kids and pretty flippin’ entertaining for the parents too (the ones with ’80′s references are my favs naturally). This particular set of clips from Up! is all about squirrels…and distractions. Chasing those squirrels can certainly have some unintended and pretty funny consequences – and not just for dogs!

I wasn’t sure how a blog post, a virtual pin board and a movie would get along but it looks like it is working out to be a great mix! In the comments…what is your favorite focus resource and your biggest shiny object issue?

Jennifer – I’d have to say getting away from my computer and taking a walk really helps me refocus. If I’m on my computer trying to refocus I’m way too likely to turn to FB (hello shiny, shiny object).

Hm – favorite focus resource for me is using Producteev or some other to-do task list to keep me in line. (It also can sometimes overwhelm me to no end but that’s another story.) But unless I write down and prioritize by date what needs to happen, I’m dazed and confused all day. And speaking of that…my biggest shiny object problem are online rabbit holes. Classes, new apps, stuff that I “need” to better organize myself or teach me how to be a genius at something are forever getting in my way of productivity. Anytime I find a teleseminar or a new e-book, I have to have it. Disaster! I think it’s because sales people love to be sold.

Love the movie up.. super sentimental so I cried practically the whole time lol. I think I am probably the only person who never checked out coppyblogger. I really struggled with the shiny object syndrome. I had so many ideas… and struggled with big project completion and/ or consistency. I had big plans to launch so many different products… I got whipped by a coach who put me in my place and gave me one choice. It’s the best thing I’ve done so far. (still struggle with social media though lol) My favorite focus resource was simplifying everything and getting back to basics… consitent blogging & vlogging, focused on one product, and that’s it… Hustle Bootcamp was an excellent training tool in that for me.

Um… Ms. Burton you do a great job with social media! It doesn’t look like you’re struggling from the outside. But, I guess it’s like Marcus Buckingham says. We can be good at a lot of “weaknesses.” And a strength is something that makes us feel strong.

I LOVE the movie UP! So sweet. I second copyblogger as a great resource for someone who wants to get hands on with their online content & learn the basics.

Jennifer, for me my biggest BSO is good ole fashion magazines…LOL I can spend hours and hours flipping through them! My favorite refocus resource – is just walking away from everything and everybody, having a glass of wine or cocktail. Actually going to the bookstore to flip through magazine is one way for me to refocus :-) . What else oh, calling up my friends to chat/catch up on things.
What I use to keep me focus on a task – a timer! Works like a charm everytime.
Funny you mentioned copyblogger I think I’ve been to that site 2 times and by accident. Thanks for pointing out these great resources. By the way, the movie up I could not finish it becuase it makes me cry way too much and puts me in a sentimental state so i just avoid it. :-)

You know I love the grab bag but this week was awesome because you put a zinger in there! Pinterest of COURSE! Copyblogger well YA! But UP! So awesome on many levels. Inspiration, creativity, thinking out of the box, wacky problem solving, loving your elders, not judging a book (bird?) by its cover and love…lots and lots of love!

Many thanks for this one Jennifer!!!!
